Description
In a nutshell:
A classic Gueuze from the Zenne Valley packed with layers of flavour and plenty of character.
The lowdown:
This distinctive, tangy and complex blend of 1, 2, and 3-year-old lambics is named after Armand Debelder, the man who made the 3 Fonteinen brewery's name, and his father Gaston, whose love of these beers started it all. Unfiltered, unpasteurised, and naturally carbonated, it's slightly hazy with a lively fizz. Complex aromas of green apple, citrus, farmyard earthiness, and a touch of oak lead to a tangy, vibrant palate. Tart lemony acidity is perfectly balanced by subtle earthy undertones and a crisp, dry finish. It's a brilliant match for pork belly with crackling, where the acidity cuts through the richness, and works beautifully alongside tangy goat's cheese. Layered with flavour, it's a wonderful expression of one of Belgium's unique beer styles.
The Brewery:
In Belgium, where beer is practically a way of life, the Lambics and Gueuze beers of the Zenne valley stand out as something special - and Brouwerij 3 Fonteinen is one of the most outstanding practitioners. It all started back in 1953, when Gaston Debelder opened a bar and restaurant in Beersel. He became known for blending lambics from other brewers, earning himself a loyal following. Leap forward to 1998, and the family decided it was time to start brewing their own. These days, they're one of the few brewing and ageing their lambics completely in-house, sticking to traditional methods while adding their own inventive touch. Their beers are distinctive and special and worth looking out for.
Style - Lambic & Traditional Sours ABV 7.3% - Strong
