Description
In a nutshell:
Brimming with bold dark fruit, a dash of spice, and a touch of earthiness, this vibrant yet rugged red beautifully channels Toro's wild charm.
The lowdown:
In this remote corner of Castilla y León, long a winemaking region but only recently for higher quality wines, Tempranillo - or Tinta de Toro, as it's known locally - shines in this vibrant expression. Aged in both French and American oak for nine months, it pours a deep black cherry and opens with bold aromas of red and black berries. On the palate, it's balanced and structured, offering medium to full body with a satisfying, juicy finish. It's a wine with real character, capturing Toro's rugged spirit while delivering a touch of finesse.
The Producer:
Bodegas Vetusis part of the Antón family's portfolio, who, after success in Rioja and Ribera del Duero, spotted Toro's potential and snapped up 20 hectares here in 2003, with a winery following in 2008. Set along the Duero River in northwest Spain, Toro's extreme climate - biting winters and scorching summers - keeps the viticulturalists on their toes. Yet, the poor soils and low yields work in the vineyard's favour, producing wines with impressive depth and vibrancy. The team at Vetus have honed their craft, using these conditions to create wines that truly capture the essence of the region.
When to drink:
Ideal with rich, gamey fare like venison stew or duck confit, or even a wedge of mature Manchego or aged Gouda - the bold tannins and dark fruit work a treat with those intense flavours and rich textures.
Suitable for Vegans
