Description
In a nutshell:
A wonderfully elegant, premium Blanc de Blancs from the hillside slopes of Trentino, northern Italy.
The lowdown:
The best plots of the Lunelli family's chardonnay go into Perlé which is the essence of the Ferrari house style. The first vintage of this was produced in 1971 and it's been one of their flagship cuvées ever since. Made in the Metodo Classico its aged more than 4 years on its lees which helps it acquire a real complexity and depth of flavour. Its aromas are of almond blossom and ripe apples while on the tongue it's got a velvety texture which brings out the rich, ripe fruit and brioche flavours exceptionally well. An altogether classic Blanc de Blancs made with impeccable Italian panache.
The Producer:
In the northeast of Italy in the Trentino region is a high-quality sparkling wine region which goes under the name Trento DOC. From here are produced some impressive Metodo Classico wines from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir made in the same way as Champagne. Indeed, the region's leading producer, Cantine Ferrari, can take a lot of the credit for this since the company's founder, Giulio Ferrari, set out with precisely this objective back in 1902. It was in the 1950s however, when the company passed into the hands of the current owners, the Lunelli family, that things started to take off. Today the company is in the hands of the third generation of the family being led by Matteo Lunelli who runs the business along with other family members.
When to drink:
Seductive and elegant it makes an impressive aperitif wine and is a good partner to pastry desserts.
