The Lowdown:
Franciacorta is Italy's answer to Champagne, and this Blanc de Blancs makes that point with precision. Made entirely from Chardonnay and aged for around 1,000 days on lees - Milledi means 'a thousand days' - it's finely textured with a palate that's all citrus, white peach and a touch of pastry. The mousse is firm, the finish dry, and the detail impressive throughout. Elegant and sharply defined - a wine made with purpose, offering depth without weight and refinement without distraction.

Ferghettina is a stand-out example showing that Italian sparkling wine isn't just about Prosecco. Founded in 1991 by Roberto Gatti and very much a family-run affair, they specialise in Franciacorta, Italy's top sparkling wine. With over 200 hectares of vines, mainly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, they create a range of styles from their base in Adro, between Milan and Brescia. Franciacorta from talented producers like Ferghettina really stands up to Champagne, both in quality and price.
