Description
In a nutshell:
A light and delicate Kabinett style Riesling from the Nahe Valley.
The lowdown:
This is a sophisticated Kabinett Riesling, the lightest and most delicate of German Riesling styles. Low in alcohol, high in acidity and with a slight touch of sweetness this is a beautiful, precise wine. The Leistenberg vineyard lies just outside the Dönnhoff's home town of Oberhausen and its southeast facing slopes bask in the morning sun drying any moisture and promoting healthy fruit. The afternoon sun is less powerful allowing the grapes to ripen for a long time without becoming overripe and the alcohol level too high. A perfect vineyard then for Kabinett wines! Bright citrus, juicy red apple and peach flavours with a slate minerality and spicy acidity. The length is long and textured, there is a real finesse about this wine.
The Producer:
The Dönnhoff estate is firmly established as one of the best producers in the beautiful Nahe Valley and can trace its roots back to the mid-1700s. They're based in the small town of Oberhausen in the heart of the region where they have around twenty hectares of vines mainly planted with Riesling. Under the guidance of Helmut Dönnhoff, winemaker from the early 1970s, the estate established its reputation as one of the finest in the region with admirers such as Hugh Johnson and Robert Parker. Helmut's son, Cornelius, is now at the helm and with the skill and passion he's clearly inherited the quality of the estate's output continues to impress.
When to drink:
Drinking now though will keep another 5 years or so. Try with Asian cuisine that's isn't too hot such as some Thai dishes, works well with sushi, or try with richer pork dishes.
Suitable for Vegans
