Description
Madeira
ABV 19.0% - 75.0cl
In a Nutshell:
Lush, nutty and full of flavour - sweet but bright, with all the lift and tang that sets Madeira apart.
The Lowdown:
Sweet Madeira's a breed apart - rich and nutty, dessert-wine sweet yet alive with a brightness nothing else quite matches. Here the Tinta Negra grape takes on five years of slow cask ageing, building layers of dried fig, toffee and caramelised orange peel while keeping that vital streak of acidity. The result is generous and full-flavoured yet strikingly fresh, its sweetness balanced by lift and definition. It's classic Madeira - bold, bright and utterly distinctive.
The Producer:
Founded in 1850 and still family-run, Pereira d'Oliveira is one of the great keepers of Madeira tradition. Step into their cellars in Funchal and it feels like time has barely moved on - dark old casks, heavy bottles and labels that look straight out of another century. They are one of the few houses to survive from the pre-phylloxera period and have maintained a stock of old and rare wines dating well back into the 1800s. While others have modernised, they've simply carried on doing what they've always done: maturing wines slowly in wood, bottling only when ready, and guarding one of the island's most extraordinary libraries of vintages. Less commercial than their peers, they remain custodians of Madeira's heritage and a touchstone for authenticity and age-worthy style.
When to Drink:
Best slightly chilled with chocolate, sticky toffee pudding or strong blue cheese, or just poured on its own to round off the evening.
