Description
Madeira
ABV 19.0% - 37.5cl
In a Nutshell:
Nutty, gently sweet and lifted by bright acidity - smooth and balanced in the traditional medium-dry style, refined by five years in oak.
The Lowdown:
Think of Oloroso to get some rough bearings here, though bear in mind this has that livelier, fresher side that comes from the bright natural acidity Madeira always has. Made mainly from Tinta Negra and aged for five years in old oak casks, it strikes a fine balance between mellow sweetness and tangy lift, with flavours of caramelised orange, roasted nuts and toffee. The acidity gives it focus and freshness, carrying the richness into a clean, nutty finish. Smooth, polished and full of flavour, it's a fine example of the traditional medium-dry style from one of the island's oldest family producers, and also excellent for adding depth to sauces or glazes.
The Producer:
Founded in 1850 and still family-run, Pereira d'Oliveira is one of the great keepers of Madeira tradition. Step into their cellars in Funchal and it feels like time has barely moved on - dark old casks, heavy bottles and labels that look straight out of another century. They are one of the few houses to survive from the pre-phylloxera period and have maintained a stock of old and rare wines dating well back into the 1800s. While others have modernised, they've simply carried on doing what they've always done: maturing wines slowly in wood, bottling only when ready, and guarding one of the island's most extraordinary libraries of vintages. Less commercial than their peers, they remain custodians of Madeira's heritage and a touchstone for authenticity and age-worthy style.
When to Drink:
Slightly chilled with hard cheese, pate or roasted nuts, or as a mellow after-dinner glass.
