Description
Madeira
ABV 19.0% - 50.0cl
In a Nutshell:
Dry, nutty and complex - aged ten years for extra depth and finesse, while still keeping Madeira's hallmark freshness.
The Lowdown:
Boldly mature and richly mineral, yet clean-lined and bright - this is dry Madeira that's spent a decade in cask and grown more assured with time. The colour has deepened to pale amber and the flavours broadened into roasted almond, dried citrus peel and a touch of toffee. It's full of flavour but not weighty, lifted by the firm, natural acidity that defines the style. Long, savoury and beautifully balanced, it's an elegant, focused Madeira with plenty of character and grip.
The Producer:
Founded in 1850 and still family-run, Pereira d'Oliveira is one of the great keepers of Madeira tradition. Step into their cellars in Funchal and it feels like time has barely moved on - dark old casks, heavy bottles and labels that look straight out of another century. They are one of the few houses to survive from the pre-phylloxera period and have maintained a stock of old and rare wines dating well back into the 1800s. While others have modernised, they've simply carried on doing what they've always done: maturing wines slowly in wood, bottling only when ready, and guarding one of the island's most extraordinary libraries of vintages. Less commercial than their peers, they remain custodians of Madeira's heritage and a touchstone for authenticity and age-worthy style.
When to Drink:
Slightly chilled as an aperitif or with roasted nuts and firm cheeses - or try it with smoked fish for something more off-beat. Holds up perfectly once opened, so you can enjoy it over several days.
