Description
In a nutshell:
A wonderfully refined, highly regarded Rioja Gran Reserva, with layers of dark fruit, dried herbs, spice, and a touch of tobacco, all polished by long ageing for a smooth, elegant finish.
The lowdown:
This is one of the benchmark Gran Reservas that shows Rioja at its most elegant and refined. Made from low-yielding bush vines and hand-harvested fruit, only the best grapes make it into the blend. It spends four years ageing in a mix of French and American oak, followed by three more in bottle to bring everything together. Dark berry fruits, mocha, and cinnamon shine through, with smooth caramel and vanilla notes blending beautifully with plum and damson on the finish. Complex, balanced, and layered, it's a wonderfully structured wine that shows how traditional Rioja can be both powerful and graceful.
The Producer:
Founded in 1879, CVNE, or 'Compañia Vinicola del Norte de España', has become a cornerstone of Spanish winemaking. Still based in Haro, where it all began, this family-run winery has maintained its roots while growing into one of Spains largest vineyard owners. Known for their exceptional Rioja, they produce under several labels: 'Cune', 'Imperial', 'Viña Real', and 'Contino'. And their wines are a byword for tradition and quality.
When to drink:
Classic Rioja food pairings like roast lamb, braised beef, or venison stew work brilliantly - the rich fruit and savoury depth complement slow-cooked, flavour-packed dishes with a comforting feel.
