Description
In a nutshell:
Succulent, expressive and vibrant, a superb example of northern Rhône Syrah.
The lowdown:
Cornas is one of the highly prized northern Rhône appellations that produce seriously good quality expression of Syrah siting, as it does, on the opposite side of the river to the vineyards of Hermitage. This, Stéphane Robert's Cornas, is made from fruit from his fifteen tiny parcels dotted around the appellation. The ripe and spicy aromas are full of aromatic, ripe black fruits and on the palate there's more black fruit, mushrooms and dark chocolate - there's plenty going on here to keep you interested. The tannins are nicely smooth and help the wine fill the mouth silkily and with finesse. This is a Rhône Syrah worth seeking out.
The Producer:
This small family estate of Domaine du Tunnel is run by Stéphane Robert and his wife Sandrine and has cellars in a former railway tunnel in the charming village of Saint-Péray in the northern Rhône, hence the name. Stéphane owns 12 hectares of vines in the appellations of Cornas, Saint-Péray, Saint-Joseph and Condrieu. Since the mid 1990's when he first started out Stéphane has created for himself a pretty enviable reputation and his wines now find their way all around the world.
When to drink:
This is just calling out to be paired with rich meaty dishes, beef, duck, venison to name a few.
