Description
In a nutshell:
A crisply sophisticated, sparkling New Zealand blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
The lowdown:
Cloudy Bay is the brand that made New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc famous the world over. Well, this is their equally impressive sparkling wine which is made from Marlborough grown Chardonnay and Pinot Noir and vinified using the methode traditionelle. As you would expect it's a top notch sparkling and a match for many a Champagne costing a good deal more. Full of crisp apple flavours, underpinned by nutty yeast complexity derived from two years bottle maturation on lees it subtly combines fresh and fruity Chardonnay notes with rich and savoury hints of Pinot Noir.
The Producer:
Back in 1985 Cloudy Bay was one of the first wineries to venture into Marlborough at the top end of New Zealands South Island. At that time, it was almost an unimaginable place to set-up a vineyard. But Cloudy Bay's founder, David Hohnen, was convinced of its potential to produce great wine and to achieve his aims, invested in the best land of the region. Since then, Marlborough has become New Zealand's leading wine region and Sauvignon Blanc arguably the world's most popular white wine. Cloudy Bay, the name came from a body of water explorer Captain James Cook discovered during his voyage to New Zealand in 1770, can claim to be the wine that launched Kiwi Sauvignon Blanc onto the world stage.
When to drink:
A fresh, aperitif style of sparkler. It's also superb sipped alongside things like seared scallops and other fresh sea food.
