Description
In a nutshell:
A plush and generous Châteauneuf-du-Pape without being over the top.
The lowdown:
The essence of Châteauneuf is being big and full-bodied, and this super, savoury and spicy example undoubtedly hits that spot. What it doesn't do though is take things to excess. The ripe red fruit is lively and fresh giving a pleasing juicy zestiness. There's plenty of substance on the palate and the tannins are firm, but fine and make for an altogether vert attractive, well proportioned wine. The blend here comprises about two-thirds Grenache with Mourvedre making up most of the rest. It was aged for 18 months in a mixture old oak barrels and concrete tanks before bottling.
The Producer:
André Brunel is one of the big names of Châteauneuf and his skills have earned him worldwide recognition for the intensity and concentration of his wines. The estate has 22 hectares of vines in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and 40 more in the wider Côtes du Rhône. André's son Fabrice now heads up the team and his style is one aimed to bring out the inherent elegance in the wines rather than just push for power and body. The evidence of recent vintages is that this approach is certainly bearing fruit.
When to drink:
This is the sort of thing that will be delicious with richly flavoured pork dishes.
Suitable for Vegans
