Description
In a nutshell:
A Northern Rhône with elegance and a hint of swagger - black pepper and violets with a backbone of granite.
The lowdown:
This 2019 Saint-Joseph opens with a touch of reserve - dark berries, a hint of violets, and an undercurrent of black pepper. The vineyards are ancient, meticulously farmed in the biodynamic manner. The wine, Syrah-dominant, is coaxed into its depth through long fermentation and a judicious touch of oak. Patience is rewarded. Swirling unlocks a trove of spice and a mineral edge, like a whisper of the sun-soaked granite slopes. It's surprisingly graceful given its initial heft. This Rhône wrangler isn't afraid to show its muscles, all dark fruit and cracked pepper with a touch of floral charm, but thankfully it remembers its manners and finishes dry as a witty quip.
The Producer:
Indisputably one of the Rhône's greats, M. Chapoutier boasts a rich history dating back to 1808 in Tain l'Hermitage. The estate's holdings are impressive, spanning the length of the Rhône and beyond, even reaching Australia. Yet, it's the arrival of Michel Chapoutier in 1990 that marks a turning point. His championing of biodynamic viticulture, coupled with exceptional vineyard sites, catapulted Chapoutier back to the top tier of Rhône producers. Their commitment to natural practices is absolute - no herbicides or pesticides, and a belief in biodiversity within the vineyards. Interestingly, their labels feature Braille since the mid-1990s. Today, they own Europe's largest biodynamic vineyard and create some of the Rhône's most iconic wines. Driven by Michel's energy, Chapoutier continues to acquire prime vineyards, cementing their status as a leader in the region.
When to drink:
Rich with dark fruit and spice, this savoury, structured wine offers both immediate pleasure and cellaring potential; best enjoyed into the late 2020s alongside roast lamb, partridge, or a creamy goat's cheese.
