Description
In a nutshell:
A classic, rich, elegant left bank claret from St-Estèphe with a subtle aromatic and fruit character.
The lowdown:
Since being acquired by Martin and Olivier Bouygues in 2006 Tronquoy-Lalande has had millions of Euros spent on it, the benefit of which is now being seen in their wines. It may only be a Cru Bourgeois, but the year after year quality means it's punching well above this level. In addition 2014 was a good year in the northern Médoc which has also boosted this particular vintage. It's a blend of 56% Merlot, 37% Cabernet Sauvignon with the rest being a little Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. On the nose it's got a savoury, herby quality with plenty of ripe black cherry and plummy notes alongside. The body's got good weight without being overbearing and the smooth tannins and sweet oak balance the rich fruit well giving it all a very cultivated and harmonius feel.
When to drink:
It's got all the maturity needed to make it ideal drinking now, but it'll also keep in top condition until at least 2030.
