Description
In a nutshell:
This left bank Claret is sumptuously fruity with ripe blackcurrants and a touch of cedar, all held together by a well-balanced, effortlessly classic structure.
The lowdown:
Château Léoville-Poyferré sits firmly in Bordeaux's premier league, and this, the estate's second wine, more than lives up to expectations. The nose is floral and delicately nuanced, while the palate delivers concentrated brambly fruit with a fine, polished character thats come into its own with a few years of ageing. A blend of roughly two-thirds Cabernet Sauvignon, a quarter Merlot, and a touch of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, it spends time in two-year-old French oak barrels, adding subtle depth without overpowering its balance. There's a refinement here that properly reflects the château's pedigree, making it a good example of quality Saint-Julien..
The Producer:
Château Léoville Poyferré being a deuxième cru classé estate is up there among the most prestigious châteaux in Bordeaux. It has 80 hectares of vines planted almost entirely with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. It has been owned by the Cuvelier family for over century and shares facilities with its sister estate Château Moulin Riche which was once considered its second wine. The estate has long been one of the most innovative in Bordeaux and over the years they've pioneered techniques and practices initially seen as eccentric but later widely taken up across the region. Under head oenologist Isabelle Davin the future success of the château would seem to be in safe hands.
When to drink:
It's spot on with roast rib of beef or a grilled sirloin - the brambly fruit and smooth structure match beautifully. Ready to enjoy now, but good for another 5-6 years.
Suitable for Vegetarians
