Description
In a nutshell:
A balanced, aromatic Graves with dark berry and plum notes, a hint of smoky minerality, and smooth tannins leading to a refined finish.
The lowdown:
Mouras is a Graves estate that has a lower profile than it deserves. A blend of 60% Merlot with equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, it's reliably concentrated yet elegantly restrained. Thanks to a warm late summer in 2018, the fruit ripened to its fullest, lending a slightly richer texture without sacrificing Graves' hallmark earthy complexity. And after 12 months in oak, it comes layered with dark fruit and spice on the palate and an appealing mineral character. Smooth, ripe tannins round things off, giving it a supple, well-structured finish that's nicely refined and satisfying.
The Producer:
Château Mouras is a small 6-hectare property with vineyards spread across the Graves communes of Portets, Illats, and Landiras, just south of Bordeaux. Owned by Jean-Christophe Barbe, professor of oenology at Bordeaux University and noted Sauternes producer at Château Laville, Château Mouras is a less well-known but no less noteworthy project. This small estate benefits from the unique gravelly soils of Graves, producing wines that reflect the minerality and structure of the region. It's a modest operation, but it quietly shines, showing Barbe's expertise stretches beyond the confines of his celebrated Sauternes.
When to drink:
Lovely alongside grilled lamb, a hearty mushroom risotto, or aged cheeses, bringing out its dark fruit, earthy notes, and mineral finish - and it's drinking at its peak now.
