Description
In a nutshell:
Blackcurrant, cedar, and a hint of graphite come together with firm tannins and a polished finish in this textbook Pauillac.
The lowdown:
This is a bit of a hidden gem for Pauillac, deserving more recognition than it gets. With vineyards sharing the same terroir as illustrious neighbours like Latour and Mouton-Rothschild, and made by the team at Château Fonbadet, it's one to take seriously. The blend is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon, with over three-quarters in the mix, and it's aged for about 15 months in French oak. That gives it inviting aromas of blackberries and cassis, with subtle hints of cinnamon and clove from the oak. The palate is well-balanced, with smooth tannins, fresh acidity, concentrated fruit, and a bright finish. A class act that reliably punches above its weight.
The Producer:
Domaines Peyronie is based at Château Fonbadet, near the Gironde and just south of Pauillac. They also manage Châteaux Montgrand-Milon, an estate acquired in the 1930s from Château Latour, with vineyards sitting close to Latour and Mouton-Rothschild. In recent years, they've worked with winemakers like Michel Rolland and Julien Viaud, refining their approach to produce wines that are elegant, subtle, and true to Pauillac's classic style. With a strong sense of place and a careful hand in the cellar, they've built a solid reputation for crafting wines that reflect the best of the area.
When to drink:
Best enjoyed now or over the next decade, this pairs a treat with gigourit, the lamb stew of Saintonge, or a no-nonsense roast lamb with garlic and rosemary.
Suitable for Vegans
