Description
In a nutshell:
Rich and full-bodied yet effortlessly elegant, this is Languedoc at its best - silky, expressive, and shaped by sun, sea breezes, and limestone soils.
The lowdown:
A classic Languedoc red blend with a coastal influence, this comes from the area known as La Clape, where sea breezes bring a freshness that sets it apart from more inland styles. Syrah, Carignan, Grenache, Mourvèdre, and Cinsault come together in a bold yet beautifully balanced wine, with half the blend aged in wooden vats. There's plenty of ripe cassis, violet, liquorice, and black pepper, all wrapped up in a silky, racy texture that gives it real finesse. You still get all the warmth and wild herb character the Languedoc is known for, but here it's lifted by a brightness that makes it especially compelling.
The Producer:
Set near the rocky outcrop of La Clape in Languedoc, Château de la Négly sits in one of southern France's up and coming appellations. Once just part of the wider Languedoc designation, La Clape earned AOC status in 2015, thanks to its striking mix of limestone soils, Mediterranean heat, and cooling sea breezes - perfect conditions for wines with depth, freshness, and a distinctive saline edge. Owner Jean Paux-Rosset, with consultant oenologist Claude Gros, takes a hands-off approach, working with low-yielding, hand-picked fruit to make wines that are full of character and a real reflection of this remarkable terroir.
When to drink:
Indulgent and silky, this is just the thing for a ribeye steak with garlic butter or slow-braised lamb shoulder. Big on fruit and spice, it won't be shy next to juicy red meat.
