Description
In a nutshell:
A rich, fruity and floral white Pineau des Charentes from the Cognac region of France often drunk as an aperitif.
The lowdown:
Pineau des Charentes is a speciality of the Cognac region where year old Cognac is added to ready to ferment grape juice. The result is a sweet aperitif best drunk slightly chilled. Château de Beaulon's 5 Year Old white is made using Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc grape must and spends 5 years in barrel marrying with cognac to make a very harmonius finished product. It has a light golden colour, with aromas of fresh sun ripened grapes, a subtle honeyed sweetness and some delicate floral notes. The palate is sweet and lucious with those floral notes coming back into evidence at the clean, refreshing finish.
The Producer:
In 1965 Christian Thomas acquired the historic buildings of Château de Beaulon and it's from here that the family business is run. Their cognacs are distilled from the traditional grape varieties in four small copper pot stills, which generate a wealth of fruity aroma compounds compared to larger stills and at Beaulon they pride themselves on ageing their cognac well beyond the legal minimum for each level, resulting in a wonderful blend of aromatic spirit and smooth wood. They also produce excellent examples of the local speciality Pineau des Charentes in which year-old cognac is blended with freshly pressed grape juice before being matured for several years to make a mellow, fruity aperitif.
When to drink:
While an excellent aperitif it also goes really well with things like pan fird scallops, foie gras or creamy fruit desserts,
