Description
In a nutshell:
Creamy, toasty and ripe, this is a temptingly richer style of Blanc de Blancs Champagne
The lowdown:
Elegance is the essential calling card of Blanc de Blancs and this cuvée of Gremillet's is no exception. The silky aromas mix easily with rounded, yeasty, biscuity notes and ripe mature fruit to give a Champagne that's pleasingly mouth filling and with a certain delicacy all at the same time. There are four or five vintages of Chardonnay in the blend and with about 20% reserve wine to ensure the house style is maintained. This is a fine expression of Blanc de Blancs.
The Producer:
The Gremillet estate was founded by Jean-Michel Gremillet in 1979 when he inherited a plot of vines from his mother, Lulu. Today, the house possesses over 40 hectares of vineyards and is situated in a small village 45 kilometres from Troyes - the historic capital of Champagne - and 180 kilometres south of Reims. The vines lie on steep, sun-drenched hillsides in Kimmeridgian clay-limestone soils. Pinot Noir is king here, and constitutes around 94% of Gremillets plantings, with the remainder dedicated to Chardonnay, ideal for creating a classic, baked biscuit, rich, fruit-flavoured Champagne.
When to drink:
A stand-out aperitif to serve alongside canapés. With food, the slight extra richness works well with things like scallops or grilled turbot.
