Description
In a nutshell:
A refined, crisp Chablis with lively citrus and green apple flavours, enhanced by a subtle minerality and a rounded depth from old vines.
The lowdown:
"Vieilles Vignes" means old vines, which here are around 50 years of age and lend a little extra body, richness and complexity. In addition, about 10% is fermented and aged in large oak barrels, giving a subtle texture without being overpowering. The nose is classic Chablis, with earthy, chalky notes, while the palate is rounder, with ripe fruit and herbal hints. The touch of oak softens the edges, and the old vines bring a lovely depth and nuance, making it both approachable and layered.
The Producer:
Domaine de la Motte is a 25-hectare, family run winery handed down from father to son since 1950. It's now under the stewardship of Bernard Michaut, an ex-chef, who works with his son Adrien. Their winemaking is meticulous and the wines are benchmarks for the region. They are fastidious about producing concentrated, mineral and very precise wines which reflect the particular terroirs of Chablis, with vines on both Portlandian and Kimmeridgian soils. La Motte's wines are regularly chosen for the Tastevinage label, a rigorous selection by the Confrérie des Chevaliers de Tastevin of wines they regard as offering the best of the region in terms of quality and style.
When to drink:
This goes down a treat with dishes like seared scallops, creamy mushroom risotto, or classic roast chicken the bright acidity and touch of oak balance the richness, lifting without overpowering.
