Description
In a nutshell:
A rounded and rich, premium Chablis made from a selection of the area's top vineyards.
The lowdown:
This wine is the top cuvée of Maison Régnard and comes in a bulbous 17th century style bottle. Instead of being from a single vineyard this is an assemblage sourced from some of their best grand and premier cru vineyards across the appellation. Each parcel is vinified separatey and then carefully assembled to reach the quality they're looking for. It's a wine that's very lean and long in the mouth, with clearly defined flavours of white peach, green apple and lemon zest appearing initially, before the chalky minerality from the nose emerges from the mid-palate. Highly convincing now, this vintage should improve with another year in bottle and should drink well through to the mid-2020s.
The Producer:
Maison Régnard is one of the oldest and most prestigious Chablis producers and was founded in 1860 by the eponymous Monsieur Régnard. In 1984, Baron Patrick de Ladoucette acquired the domaine to add to his well-regarded stable of estates in the Loire valley. With the investment and resources of the group Patrick's been able to preserve and improve the style and quality of the wines they produce. Wines from all seven Grands Crus de Chablis (Les Clos, Bougros, Blanchots, Grenouilles, Les Preuses, Valmur and Vaudésir), the five principal Premiers crus (Fourchaume, Montmains, Vaillons, Montée de Tonnerre and Mont de Milieu) are made together with regular Chablis and Petit Chablis cuvées. In 1992 a special cuvée, Grand Régnard, was introduced. It's presented in a unique bottle and comes from a selection of their best plots and has become one of their most sought-after wines.
When to drink:
A luxurious wine made to go with luxurious dishes; lobster, Poulet de Bresse with truffles, or foie gras is just the sort of thing.
