In a nutshell:
A crisp, dry and refreshing Spanish white with plenty of character from the northeastern province of Aragon.
The lowdown:
The ancient wine producing region of Cariñena in dry and arid interior of northeastern Spain is better known its robust reds. However this excellent value white, made from 60% Garnacha Blanca and 40% Chardonnay was one that really stood out from the crowd. Up front, along with tropical pineapple, it's got crisp apple and citrus notes while on the palate there's a touch of creaminess from the lees ageing (Sobre Lias is Spanish for "Sur Lie") along with the ripe fruitiness. With its well judged acidity it makes for a well structured, easy to drink wine.
The Producer:
Bodegas Care sits not far from the town of Cariñena, one of the oldest wine producing regions of Aragon in northeast Spain. A relative newcomer, they started up in 2000 and make all their wines from their own vineyards at Finca Bancales and Finca Cadillos which extend to around 100 hectares in total. The modern winery, run by owner and head wine maker Nacho Lazaro, sits among the vineyards and is most definitely 'state of the art'. The wines they make are all excellent value and focus on Garnacha and Cariñena for the reds and Garnacha Blanca and Chardonnay for the whites.
When to drink:
Easy going and enjoyable it's a good 'any occasion' wine and also great with fish, seafood and rice dishes.
