Description
In a nutshell:
Fresh and precise with a touch of richness, this is a clean, confident white from Sicily with citrus, stone fruit and a faint salty edge.
The lowdown:
Native to Sicily and built for the heat, Grillo is a grape that shrugs off the sun to produce wines that stay crisp, bright and full of life. It helps when the vineyards hug the coast, with sea breezes keeping everything fresh and focused - as they do here. But this isn't just a lean, breezy white. Alongside the citrus bite theres peachy ripeness, a flicker of fresh herbs, and a gentle saline edge that nods to infuence of the nearby sea. Once mainly used for Marsala, Grillo's found its stride in still wines - and this is a fine example.
The Producer:
Cantine Pellgrino, one of Sicily's most important wineries, is one of only three original 19th-century founders of the Marsala trade still in existence. Despite the relative decline of Marsala over the years, they've been pivotal in bringing Sicily's other wines to prominence. Today, with over 150 hectares of vineyards and three wineries, they produce highly respected wines that find their way around the world. Living up to their rich heritage while showcasing the diverse potential of Sicilian wines they're a quiet yet significant player in the island's wine scene.
When to drink:
Try it with spaghetti alle vongole, grilled sardines, or pasta with courgette and mint. A perfect food wine fresh, gently rounded and just the thing for simple Mediterranean dishes.
