In a nutshell: An excellent, single vineyard, dry, organic, Austrian Riesling from one of the country's top producers.
The lowdown: Brundlmayer are internationally recognised as one of Austria's best wineries producing consistently superb wines. Based in the Kamptal region, just north of the Danube, Willi Brundlmayer has farmed organically for over 40 years with a real emphasis on single variety wines, the vines they come from, the soil they grow in and the year they are grown. This Erste Lage (First Growth) Riesling comes from the south south-west facing Zobinger Heiligenstein vineyard, the oldest which Brundlmayer farm. Pronounced flavours of citrus, stone and tropical fruit; lime, peach, pasionfruit and an almost chilli-like spice. Concentrated and lively, fresh, balanced acidity and a touch of a salty note on the long finish. A great wine that thanks to the promising 2019 vintage will age over the next 10-30 years.

When to drink: Young and fresh now but with the quality to keep for the next couple of decades.
Without doubt Weingut Bründlmayer is one of the star producers of Austria's Kamptal region, about 70km north-west of Vienna. Willi Bründlmayer, who has been at the helm for over 40 years, owns 90 hectares of vineyards here on the rocky terraces of Langenlois and these are farmed according to organic principles (and were certified as such in 2019). Among the sites are some of Kamptal's best including Zöbinger Heiligenstein which produces some sublime Rieslings. Willi Bründlmayer, a member of the Académie Internationale du Vin, heads up the winemaking operations along with his son Vincent, Thomas Klinger and Andreas Wickhoff, one of Austria's few MWs. Meticulous attention to detail is one of their hallmarks together with very careful harvesting and precise selection of grapes and minimal handling in the winery which results in pure, restrained and mineral wines. Synonymous with the best of Austrian winemaking their wines offer consistently reliable value from entry level right to their top cuvées.
