Description
In a nutshell:
Crisp and refreshing, this vibrant Argentinian Chardonnay delivers pure, unadulterated citrus and orchard fruit flavours.
The lowdown:
This screams Chardonnay - you get a blast of tropical fruit and tangy lime right away. It comes from vineyards high up in Mendoza where the nights are cool - perfect for this kind of grape. No messing with oak barrels here, the winemakers keep it fresh and fruity. It's easy to drink, sort of delicate, with a nice crisp finish that hangs around in a very pleasant way.
The Producer:
Federico Benegas Lynch was born into a winemaking family, but it wasn't until after he'd forged a successful business career in the bright lights of Buenos Aries that he returned to Mendoza and bought Finca La Libertad, an historic 40-hectare vineyard with stony soils on the old Upper Mendoza riverbank in Cruz de Piedra. He quickly set about restoring the vineyard and the old winery attached, his idea was based on the traditional French Chateaux system. Today Bodega Benegas is a hybrid between museum and family home with extensive underground cellars where archives of vintages are kept - and where they make some exemplary wines.
When to drink:
This one's a cracker for when you're after something light and zesty - perfect with a bit of grilled fish or a fresh salad.
