Description
Argentina: Mendoza
Complex & Structured Red
Full-Bodied - Oaked
ABV 14.5% - 75.0cl
In a Nutshell:
A Bordeaux-inspired Mendoza blend with layered dark fruit, refined structure, and the finesse to shine now or cellar gracefully.
The Lowdown:
Bringing together the polish of Bordeaux tradition and the vibrancy of South America, this blend has genuine presence. Old-vine fruit - including Cabernet Franc planted in 1899 - anchors a mix of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Each component spends a year in oak before blending, followed by another six months in barrel and five years in bottle before release. The aromas are captivating: ripe red and black fruits, white pepper, clove, and herbal notes of eucalyptus, thyme and rosemary, rounded out by cocoa and vanilla. On the palate it's rich and full, with supple tannins and a finish that lingers well beyond the glass.
The Producer:
Federico Benegas Lynch was born into a winemaking family, but it wasn't until after he'd forged a successful business career in the bright lights of Buenos Aries that he returned to Mendoza and bought Finca La Libertad, an historic 40-hectare vineyard with stony soils on the old Upper Mendoza riverbank in Cruz de Piedra. He quickly set about restoring the vineyard and the old winery attached, his idea was based on the traditional French Chateaux system. Today Bodega Benegas is a hybrid between museum and family home with extensive underground cellars where archives of vintages are kept - and where they make some exemplary wines.
When to Drink:
Built to age for years yet hard to resist now, it's a natural with roast lamb, venison, or beef bourguignon - the sort of dishes that match its depth perfectly.
