Description
In a nutshell:
A polished and well-balanced Pomerol with elegant fruit and ample body - classy and effortlessly drinkable.
The lowdown:
This second wine from the well-regarded Château La Pointe is a charming and approachable Pomerol, showcasing the estate's undoubted expertise. Made from around 85% Merlot with a touch of Cabernet Franc, it comes from the clay and gravel soils of Pomerol's Isle River terrace. Under the guidance of renowned winemaker Hubert de Boüard, it's plush and intense, with velvet-smooth tannins and a long, satisfying finish. Expect ripe black cherries, a hint of plums, a touch of tobacco, and a whisper of floral notes. A well-made wine and an accessible, yet stylish Pomerol.
The Producer:
Château La Pointe gets its name from a distinctive triangular plot of vines near its entrance and was one of the first Pomerol properties to earn the château label back in 1868. Historically a solid performer, things took off after an insurance company bought the estate in 2007, bringing in fresh investment and new leadership under Eric Monneret. Since then it's upped its game considerably. With 23 hectares of vines, it's one of the larger estates in Pomerol and the terroir is well-suited to both Merlot on the clay and Cabernet Franc on the more gravelly parts.
When to drink:
With its plush character and hint of forest floor, this one's perfect alongside roast venison or similar game - and it's drinking beautifully now, with plenty of life left until the end of the decade.
