Description
In a nutshell:
Crisp, elegant, and burstings with stone fruit flavours, a hallmark of Marlborough's cool-climate prowess.
The lowdown:
Succulent pear and a hint of white pepper opens the door on this dry Pinot Gris. From a small, single vineyard in Marlborough, New Zealand, this really showcases the distinctive characteristics of the region. The area's terroir contributes to its elegant acidity and just a hint of oak adds subtle texture without being overpowering. Remarkably balanced with vibrant fruit underpinning a mineral backbone, its complexity and length are something to be savoured.
The Producer:
The story of Zephyr Wines is one that mirrors more than a few others in Marlborough. The Glover family were one of the first to plant grapes on their dairy farm in the Dillon's Point sub-region in back 1988. And nineteen years later, led by eldest son Ben, the family launched Zephyr, a range of single vineyard wines of their own. Today, Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc thrive in the fertile loam soils that provide Zephyr wines with lively aromatics, great depth of flavour the excellent structural longevity for which they're renowned. Made in Bens trademark style the wines are expressive and elegant with bags of personality. After spending more than two decades working for some of New Zealands top wineries, earning a reputation as one of the industry's most talented and respected winemakers in the process, his family's label is now also making a mark of its own.
When to drink:
This crisp, citrusy white is a particularly food-friendly wine try it with roast chicken, a creamy seafood risotto, or a plate of dressed crab.
