Description
In a nutshell:
Juicy, vibrant and generous - a South Australian red to keep even the most picky drinkers happy.
The lowdown:
Luscious, juicy fruits with plenty of body and depth, this is an impressive advert for South Australian Grenache if ever there was one. A grape a somewhat overshadowed in this part of the world, but the guys at Willunga 100 have made it a bit of a speciality of theirs and they really turn out some delicious examples which have been turning heads for some time now. Red fruits, earthy spices and liquorice assail the nose (in a good way!) and the full-bodied feel in the mouth gives it a real generosity of spirit. Makes an interesting change from the Shiraz's or Cab Sauvs you more often come across.
A focus on Grenache was the driving force behind the setting up of Willunga 100. The owners, David Gleave MW and John Ratcliffe, had come across some plots of 50 year old vines which they felt they could focus on to in their desire to revive the neglected fortunes of the grape in the McLaren Vale. The region's combination of tailor-made geology, mediterranean climate together with their old vines produce excellent, concentrated fruit. And with their skills in the winery they turn out a range of very accomplished wines.
When to drink:
A red meat wine if ever there was one, but with its juiciness and up front fruit it's also pretty good just by itself.
Suitable for Vegans
