Description
In a nutshell:
If you're one for the finesse of Old World Syrah with a touch of sun-kissed ripeness, this elegant Stellenbosch red has your number.
The lowdown:
Picture black pepper, ripe plums, even a touch of smoke. This South African red has a real savoury edge. Made, in the classic style, it spends a good period in oak barrels to gain character. The vineyards, high on a windswept hill, deliver concentrated fruit flavours balanced by fresh acidity. This is a finely crafted wine - elegant, complex, and with a lingering finish.
The Producer:
Waterkloof, established in 2004 by Paul Boutinot, is a bit of a favourite of those who appreciate wines made with care and a more than a touch of conscience. This family-run estate is proudly organic and biodynamic, even sporting the WWF Biodiversity Champion title. Perched on the Schapenberg hills overlooking False Bay, their vineyards benefit from cool breezes and a leisurely growing season, producing wonderfully balanced fruit. In the cellar, winemaker Nadia Langenegger allows the grapes to speak for themselves with minimal interference, creating wines that feel genuine, refined, and very much a taste of their unique surroundings.
When to drink:
A fine Syrah like this is a perfect match for a slow-cooked lamb shoulder, or perhaps that beef stew you've been meaning to make.
Suitable for Vegans, Biodynamic
