Description
In a nutshell:
A polished and sophisticated Cabernet Sauvignon led South African Bordeaux Blend.
The lowdown:
Bordeaux inspired red blends are something of a speciality in South Africa's Cape wine lands and at Vilafonté their focus is entirely on this style of wine. Their 'Seriously Old Dirt' wines are, kind of, their second label, being made from barrels that didn't make it into their top cuvée Series 'C' and Series 'M'. Nevertheless, given the all round high quality here, the 'Seriously Old Dirt' wines are seriously good value. The 2020 vintage is the 9th release and is composed almost entirely of Cabernet Sauvignon (86%), with small amounts of Malbec, Merlot and Cabernet Franc and was matured for 18 months in used French oak barriques. Aromatic aromas of fresh plum, black cherry and blackberry with warming notes of baking spices and vanilla lead onto the palate with touckes of subtle liquorice, tobacco and hezelnut. More firmly structured than previous vintages but still with that youthful vibrancy and accompanying flinty minerality. The tannins are ripe and integrated which give a superb structure as it moves to the luxurious lengthy finish.
The Producer:
The vision of the three founding partners, Mike Ratcliffe, Zelma Long and Dr Phil Freese, Vilafonté was founded in 1996 when they discovered the potential for making premium Bordeaux blends from a unique vineyard site on the Paarl-Simonsberg region of South Africa. Zelma, who oversees winemaking and development of the Vilafonté style, is a well-known American winemaker and one-time chief winemaker at the Robert Mondavi Winery in California. Co-founder Mike is a leader in the Cape wine industry also managing director of his family business, Stellenbosch's Warwick Estate while Phil, also a graduate of the Rober Mondavi Winery having spent 13 years there as vice-president of Wine Growing is the creator of the vineyards.
When to drink:
Sumptuous yet mellow this is perfectly ready to drink now, but a few years in the cellar will see it get even better.
Suitable for Vegans
