Description
In a nutshell:
A superb rich and subtly spicy South African Sauvignon Blanc Semillon blend from Stellenbosch.
The lowdown:
This 60% Sauvignon Blanc 40% Semillon white Bordeaux blend is the flagship white of the highly regarded Stellenbosch based Vergelegen Estate. Both the Sauvignon and Semillon come from 20yr old vineyards, were hand-picked, whole bunch pressed, barrel fermented with the Sauvignon maturing in old large oak barrels and 25% of the Semillon in new Burgundy oak for 9 months. This wine has then spent two and half years in bottle before release. It's pale green in colour with lime and mineral aromas leading onto a full, rich and complex palate. And the lovely stone fruit flavours are backed up with a creamy body with touches of spice and a very long length.
The Producer:
Vergelegen is one of the oldest wine estates in South Africa with a history dating back as far as the early 1700s. Theyve always been an important landmark but the modern era for them really began in the late 1980s following its acquisition by the global mining group Anglo American. They invested millions in surveying the land and extensive planting of new vineyards in the best sites and in 1992 they opened a truly impressive part sunken four level winery was opened which, using gravity, minimises the use of machinery. Currently headed up by Luke O'Cuinneagain who took over the reins from legendary André van Rensburg in 2022 Vergelegen is an instance where the financial strength of a large conglomerate and the skill of excellent winemakers has had yielded wonderful results.
When to drink:
An indulgent wine that works really well with shellfish and white fish and poultry.
Suitable for Vegans
