Description
In a nutshell:
A deep, rich, and intense wine with dark fruit character and notes of spice and cedar, from the world-class Spanish producer, Bodegas Vega Sicilia.
The lowdown:
Bodegas Vega Sicilia have been producing high quality wines for over 150 years, giving them an incredible historic legacy. The estate is located in Ribera del Duero, one of Spain's most prestigious wine regions. Producers in this area strictly follow traditional winemaking methods and are meticulous to the details. Vega Sicilia Unico is a world-class wine produced by the famous winery and is considered one of the most iconic and sought-after wines from Spain. This wine represents the pinnacle of quality and excellence this region and producer have to offer. The 2013 vintage is a blend of Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, grown on the estate's own vineyard in the region. The wine is aged for a minimum of 6 years, this breaks down to 3 years spent in barrel and 3 years in bottle. The resulting wine has expressive fruity character, complexity, elegance, and a long aging potential. On the nose, the wine is deep and intense, with dark fruit aromas black cherry, blackberry, and blackcurrant, alongside subtle notes of spices, leather, tobacco, and cedar. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied with rich firm tannins, balanced well by subtle acidity and with a long and persistent finish.
The Producer:
Vega Sicilia has to be Spain's most prestigious wine estate. Known the world over for super premium wines they're base is in Valbuena de Duero a few miles to the east of Valladolid. Founded in the mid 1800's they came to prominence during the twentieth century and they're currently owned by the Álvarez family who've been at the helm since 1982. As you would expect of such a much-vaunted estate their approach to their viticulture and winemaking is meticulous and painstaking. And their care and attention bears fruit in the quality of the finished products. There are three cuvées in the range, Único, Único Reserva Especial and the baby brother, Valbuena 5°. Head of winemaking is the respected Gonzalo Iturriaga who joined the business in 2015 after extensive experience in the Spanish wine trade.
When to drink:
Best served with beef, lamb, or game dishes. This wine is ready to drink now, but also has good ageing potential to keep into the mid 2030's.
