Description
In a nutshell:
A classic Hunter Valley Shiraz with juicy red fruit, a touch of spice, and earthy, savoury notes, all wrapped up in a smooth, medium-bodied style.
The lowdown:
If you're after a more elegant take on Aussie Shiraz, the Hunter Valley's the spot, and this one shows exactly why. Made from some of Tyrrell's best vineyard blocks - averaging 40 years old - and aged in large, old oak casks, there are bright red fruits, black pepper, and sweet spice on the nose. The palate is soft and medium-bodied, with red and black fruit, savoury tannins, and crisp acidity running through. Properly refined, but still full of character.
The Producer:
A very early entrant to Australia's wine industry Tyrrell's was established in 1858 in New South Wales' Hunter Valley by English immigrant Edward Tyrrell. The company he set up has since gone on to become one of the most successful family wineries in the country with their growth over the last fifty years under Murray Tyrrell and then his son Bruce being particularly impressive. Bruce, who is currently managing director of the business, has been one the major Australian personalities of the wine world over the last few decades and with the help of some iconic wines, cemented Tyrrell's reputation as one of the country's best quality wineries. His son Chris, having entered the business in 2001, now heads up the winemaking team in his turn. The wine they're best known for is their Vat 1 Hunter Valley Semillon which if allowed to age shows all the elegance and style that Hunter Valley can produce. And in more general terms Tyrrell's signature style is for creating high quality wines that combine the new world palette of flavours with the best of old world structure and texture.
When to drink:
Versatile and food-friendly, it's great with barbecued lamb, slow-cooked beef brisket, or a classic Aussie meat pie - the wine's bright fruit, peppery spice, and savoury tannins stand up well to rich, hearty dishes.
Suitable for Vegans
