Description
In a nutshell:
An intense and richly textured Ribera del Duero from one of the region's most renowned names.
The lowdown:
Pesquera is one of the foremost Ribera del Dueros and their Crianza is one of their biggest selling wines. It's made from 100% Tempranillo, grown in their own vineyards, and is aged for 18 months in oak prior to bottling. On the nose the aromas are of blackberries and plums with spicy hints and a touch of vanilla creaminess while the palate shows delicious ripe raspberry and cherry fruit flavours. There's plenty of power here which, coupled with the rounded tannins, give it a nicely sleek and silky feel in the lead up to a subtly spicy finish.
The Producer:
Familia Fernandez Rivera: In 1972 Alejandro Fernández started making wine in his hometown of Pesquera on the banks of the Duero a few miles east of Valladolid. At that stage he may not have been aware of it, but he was playing a big part in bringing the wines of this region, Ribera del Duero, to the notice of the world. After gaining something of a reputation in Spain, being later discovered by Robert Parker, led to his wines achieved something of a cult status in the USA. Over intervening years, they have continued to cement their reputation as a leading producer in the region and steadily expanded the scale of their operations which now encompass four wineries, one of which is the well regarded Condado de Haza.
When to drink:
Complex, quite delectable and worthy of ageing; perfect to drink with al kinds of rich red meat and game dishes from stews and casseroles to roasts.
Suitable for Vegans
