Description
In a nutshell:
A beautifully crisp North Macedonian white, full of bright citrus, delicate florals, and a perfectly fresh, zesty finish.
The lowdown:
You might not have heard of Kratosija, but you may know Zinfandel - well, they're the same grape. In North Macedonia, though, it takes on a fresher, more easy-going style. No oak, no heaviness, just loads of bright redcurrant, cherry, and juicy berry fruit, backed up by a touch of spice and a subtle herbal lift. A good example of how a well-known grape under another name can surprise you making a wine that's smooth in texture and full of flavour, but with a lively, vibrant edge.
The Producer:
For years, Tikves Winery was all about quantity over quality - thanks to its time nationalised in General Tito's Yugoslavia, when the priority was mass-producing oceans of forgettable bulk wine. But since the mid-90s, with the re-emergence of private enterprise, it's been a different story. Still, probably, North Macedonia's biggest winery, Tikves has shifted gears. The focus is on native grape varieties and proving just how good they can be, from everyday bottles to serious, age-worthy wines. The 2018 purchase of the Rhône valley estate Château de Gourdon only reinforced its ambitions - more than just a local powerhouse, but a winery with international reach and expertise.
When to drink:
Very versatile - spot on with lightly grilled lamb, herby chicken, or charred Mediterranean veg. Its bright fruit and smooth texture balance these sorts of smoky, savoury flavours.
