Description
In a nutshell:
Poised and quietly complex, with fresh red fruit, savoury edges and a floral lift - classic Alto Piemonte with that lightness of touch that sets it apart.
The lowdown:
Remarkably light in colour for a red, the pale ruby hue you get here is a clear sign you're in for a more refined take on Nebbiolo. There's bright red fruit straight off, followed by a clean sweep of minerality and a savoury edge that gives it real clarity and shape. A year in used barriques adds a bit of polish without weighing anything down - it still feels soft, supple, and very drinkable. It's not trying to shout, but everything's in the right place, and if you're after a textbook example of elegance in a red, you're pretty much looking at it.
The Producer:
Founded in 1671, Tenute Sella is one of the oldest continuously operating wineries in Italy, based in Alto Piemonte at the foot of the Alps. This cooler northern corner of Piedmont turns out a fresher, more finely drawn style of Nebbiolo - lighter than the Langhe, with plenty of mineral bite. Sella has long focused on this more elegant expression, and under the direction of winemaker Riccardo Giovannini, the estate has seen a something of a resurgence - still very much true to its history, but with a renewed sense of purpose.
When to drink:
Roast pork with fennel, chicken cacciatore or mushroom risotto all work well - savoury, earthy flavours that sit neatly alongside a Nebbiolo that's ready to drink now.
Suitable for Vegans
