Description
In a nutshell:
A silky smooth dry white port from the very well known shippers, Sandeman
The lowdown:
Dry white ports are a bit of a niche wine and made to enjoy in a different way to a red port. However, they're still grown on the steep slopes of the Douro valley and made in a similar fashion. Sandeman's Fine White Port is made in a dry style, but still maintains a hint of natural sweetness. It has a host of tropical fruit aromas, gentle vanilla notes, lightly floral character and fresh crisp finish.
The Producer:
There are few more iconic images in the world of wine than the black-cloaked Sandeman Don, which was introduced in 1928. The cape was modelled on the attire worn by students at the University of Porto, while the wide-brimmed hat was a nod to the family's presence in Jerez. Sandemans acquisition by the North American drinks company Seagram in 1980 seemed to lead to quantity being more important than quality and a something of a dip in their reputation. However, a subsequent change of ownership to the Portuguese company Sogrape in 2001 with their deeper understanding of the long-term vision required to make top quality port has re-instated Sandemans position in the port firmament.
When to drink:
Nicely chilled try it as a port and tonic, perfect as a sundowner on a warm summer's day.
