Description
England: Devon
Mellow & Rounded Red
Light-Bodied - Oaked
ABV 12.0% - 75.0cl
In a Nutshell:
An English Pinot Noir with its eye on finesse: light, bright red fruit and a gentle savoury frame.
The Lowdown:
This isn't Pinot Noir in its louder, fruit-forward guise. Instead, it keeps things pared back: redcurrant, cherry and cranberry, brisk acidity and a fine, almost silken tannic line. A touch of French oak adds shape and a whisper of savoury depth without drowning out the fruit. The overall effect is precise, understated and quietly elegant - the sort of style that makes you think more of Europe's classical end than sunnier New World shores.
The Producer:
Originally known as Sharpham Estate, Sandridge Barton was one of the those that helped English wine get established, planting its first vines on the River Dart back in the 1980s and proving that Devon could do more than cream teas. In 2020 the whole operation crossed the river to Sandridge Barton near Stoke Gabriel, swapping its old home for a larger estate with limestone soils and room to grow. The winemaking remains firmly in-house, with estate fruit only and a leaning towards wild ferments. New name, new site, but the same pioneering streak.
When to Drink:
Ideal with dishes that suit delicacy over weight - roast duck, grilled salmon, or mushrooms with herbs.
