Description
In a nutshell:
An elegant, medium-bodied Tuscan red with lively berry notes, a hint of spice, and silky-smooth tannins.
The lowdown:
Think of Rosso di Montalcino as Brunello's charming understudy - approachable and offering great depth at a more friendly price. This one aged for 12 months in lightly toasted, second-use French oak, brings aromas of fresh berries, a trace of sour cherry, and hints of blackberry and black cherry with a soft touch of vanilla. On the palate, it's intense yet smooth, with balanced tannins and a medium-bodied profile. Dry and slightly sinewy, it has a refreshing edge and finishes with a lovely, lingering aromatic quality.
The Producer:
Since Marilisa Allegrini purchased San Polo in 2006, she's invested significantly in its development, and the results show in the increasingly impressive wines. Nestled in Montalcino's eastern hills, San Polo spans 22 hectares, with 16 dedicated to vine, yielding wines with a touch more body than those from the cooler northern areas. Committed to sustainability, the winery has held Casa Clima's sustainability certification since 2013, and organic certification since 2017. San Polo produces classic, expressive wines that offer a rich, grounded taste of Montalcino's unique terroir.
When to drink:
Pairs wonderfully with classic Italian dishes like pasta with tomato-based sauces or roasted pork. The bright acidity and red berry notes enhance the flavours while cutting through richer elements for a balanced bite.
