Description
In a nutshell:
Sweet, spicy Austrian Dopplebock brewed only once a year.
The lowdown:
A hugely strong, sweet and spicy Doppleback from Austria's Schloss Eggenberg Brewery. Samichlaus is quite a rarity. It's brewed on only one day of the year, St. Nicholas Day, December 6th and is then fermented and matured for ten months before bottling. Among the strongest beers you'll find this is an ale of stunning complexity. It's sweet, spicy and warming with a long lingering finish.
The Brewery:
Credited as being the oldest Austrian brewery dating all the way back to the year 999, Schloss Eggenberg, situated about 30 miles east of Salzburg, originally only brewed for the local inhabitants of surrounding villages. Commercial brewing commenced in the 17th century and its current owners bought the castle (Schloss) and brewery around 200 years ago. Eggenberg largely produce pilsner beers by style but we'd recommend you watch out for their seasonal Samichlaus - once the strongest beer in the world (at 14%) and only brewed once a year on December 6 it's aged for 10 months and is often only available in very limited supply.
