Description
In a nutshell:
Bright and expressive, this bursts with red berry flavours, herbal notes, and a fresh, mineral-driven finish that reflects its Galician roots.
The lowdown:
Hidden in the lush, green hills of inland Galicia, Ribeiro is a tiny wine region known for its steep slopes, small-scale producers, and vibrant wines. The reds here are light, fresh, and delicately fruity, with a subtle earthy character that reflects the cool, misty valleys. This charming blend of Sousón, Caiño Tinto, Brancellao, and Mencía shines with a ruby red colour and bursts with personality. Aromas of oriental spices, mint, menthol, and lavender draw you in, while the palate brims with juicy black cherry and raspberry, bright freshness, crunchy minerality, and just the right grip for a long, satisfying finish.
The Producer:
Adega Sameirás situated in the southern Galician wine region of Ribeiro has been run by Antonio Cajide since 2002. This is mountainous, inland terrain where many vineyards are on quite precipitous slopes. Antonio has 6 hectares of vines distributed among several small parcels in the area which have a range of soil types and he matches the grape varieties he grows to the prevailing terroir. His wines, therefore, are only seen in tiny quantities, but are well worth seeking out.
When to drink:
Juicy and youthful, this fresh red is perfect on its own but also pairs beautifully with dishes like albóndigas en salsa de tomate or pollo al chilindrón, as its bright fruitiness and herbal notes balance the rich, tomato-based sauces.
