Description
In a nutshell:
A fresh and minerally, organic white from the Mâconnais in southern Burgundy.
The lowdown:
The appellation of Saint-Véran lies at the southern end of Burgundy just before you reach Beaujolais and the limestone soils around here are ideal for the crisp and fruity Chardonnays that are the staple of this area. Richard and Stéphane Martin's Saint-Véran is made from fruit of 40 small parcels of vines dotted around the village of Davayé and which have an average age of 45 years. Vinified mainly in stainless steel, a small portion is left to mature in oak barrels. It's got nicely perfumed aromas with notes of citrus and stone fruits showing through and the peach and nectarine flavours on the tongue are well balanced by a crisp acidity, impressive minerality and delicate vanilla oak as it moves to the long finish.
The Producer:
Based just outside the village of Davayé, brothers Richard and Stéphane Martin took over Domaine de la Croix Senaillet from their father in the early 1990s. What was a 6.5 hectare domaine has now grown to some 25 hectares, spread over 52 individual parcels - nearly all surrounding their modern winery in the commune of Davayé. Since 2006, they have been totally organic and are now certified as such. A hallmark of their wines is that they're gorgeously, crisp, fresh, pure, crystalline, minerally, concentrated and intensely flavoured, and are a true reflection of the high quality Chardonnay that can be produced from the Mâconnais.
When to drink:
A very appealling white Burgundy. Perfect to drink on its own and a brilliant partner to seafood and white fish.
Suitable for Vegans, Organic
