Description
Dark & Strong Ale, Barley Wine
England: Surrey
ABV 7.5% - 50.0cl
In a Nutshell:
A strong, warming Winter Ale that keeps its deep, malty character despite the surprisingly pale amber colour.
The Lowdown:
Don't let the pale, amber colour fool you: Very Bad Elf is a rich, robust winter beer. Festive brews like this are usually a bit darker, but the chunky ABV and nutty, warming puts it all into context. It's brewed to an ancient recipe, using a specially recreated pale amber malt that lays on butterscotch, nuts, and biscuits. And classic Fuggles hops give just a tadge of bitterness. Full-bodied, thoroughly warming and perfectly suited to the colder months.
The Brewery:
Ridgeway Brewing has been flying the flag for classic English beer since 2002, with founder Peter Scholey at the helm. Best known for their traditional IPAs, Bitters and ESBs, Ridgeway's beers strike a balance between heritage and the tastes of today - what they call "cutting edge tradition." Now under the wing of Crafty Brewing of Dunsfold, that philosophy looks set to flourish. The two breweries share a respect for slow-brewed, characterful ales, and their partnership promises to carry Ridgeway's legacy forward - not by reinventing the wheel, but by giving it a fresh spin for the next generation of drinkers.
