Description
In a nutshell:
Distinctive and full of character, this dry Douro white is grapey and floral, with bright aromatics and a fresh, crisp finish.
The lowdown:
Put aside any ideas of a typical Douro white - this one's in a league of its own. Made from 100% Moscatel, it's got all the grapey, floral aromatics youd expect, yet stays refreshingly dry. Not the easiest style to pull off, but it's been done with real finesse here. Beneath the fragrant palate, there's a hint of richness and spice, adding depth and keeping it from feeling too delicate. Everything's beautifully balanced, with a lingering finish that leaves a lasting impression. A distinctive take on a Douro white - unusual, expressive, and well worth discovering.
The Producer:
Established in 1716, Quinta do Vallado is one of the Douro Valley's oldest and most renowned estates. For most of its history, its grapes went into Ferreira Port, but when the Ferreira Port house was sold to Sogrape in 1987, Vallado's long-standing connection was severed. Still owned by the Ferreira family, the estate shifted focus in the 1990s, bottling its own wines and quickly becoming a major force in Douro still wines. While they continue to produce Port under the Vallado label, their reds and whites now take centre stage. A state-of-the-art winery, built in 2009, underscores their commitment to innovation and cements their place at the forefront of modern Douro winemaking.
When to drink:
Brilliant with fragrant Asian dishes like Thai green curry, Vietnamese summer rolls, or Sichuan chilli prawns, where its floral aromatics and crisp dryness shine. Also a great aperitif with salted almonds and olives.
