Description
Portugal: Douro Valley
Rich & Powerful Red
Full-Bodied - Oaked
Vegan - ABV 14.0% - 75.0cl
In a Nutshell:
Full-bodied and finely tuned, this is classic Douro muscle wrapped in polish - powerful, poised and full of depth.
The Lowdown:
If you're inclined to think Douro reds are mainly about brute force, this'll give you pause for thought. Pombal do Vesuvio might be the estate's 'second' wine, but there's nothing secondary about its character. Drawn from the same steep, schist-terraced vineyards as the flagship Vesuvio, it channels the region's natural intensity into something remarkably refined. Touriga Nacional and Franca bring dark fruit, violets and graphite, supported by firm yet supple tannins and a subtle sheen of French oak. It's rich and structured, yet stays measured and composed from start to finish.
The Producer: The historic Quinta do Vesuvio sits high in the upper reaches of the Douro, first planted in the 1820s by Antonio Bernardo Ferreira, who saw its promise and made it one of the family's showpiece estates. Its remoteness, though, was always a challenge, and over time the place slipped into decline as the realities of running such an isolated property caught up. The Ferreira descendants held on for decades out of pride and sentiment, until by the late 1980s it simply wasn't practical any longer. That's when the Symingtons stepped in - recognising what lay beneath the neglect - and set about restoring Vesuvio to its former standing. With the vineyards revived and the old winery brought back to life, it's now firmly back among the Douro's great names, celebrated not only for its majestic Vintage Ports but also for its impressive still wines, first released in the 2010s.
When to Drink:
Superb with roast or grilled lamb, game dishes, or rich beef stews. The tannin and depth stand up beautifully to hearty flavours, while the freshness keeps it from ever feeling heavy.
