Description
In a nutshell:
A lemony, ripe Petit Chablis, balancing fresh citrus and crisp green apple with a subtle mineral streak and a clean, refreshing finish.
The lowdown:
Petit Chablis - what does that actually mean? Simply that the fruit comes from vineyards just outside Chablis proper, though in truth, there's often not much difference. This one comes from plots at the top of the slopes above La Motte's main vineyards and is made very much in their house style, with real finesse and bright fruit character. Fresh and light, it's got all the classic citrus, stone fruit, and steely minerality you'd expect, but with a lovely ripeness to balance it out. Certainly a cut above what the name 'Petit' might lead you to believe.
The Producer:
Domaine de la Motte is a 25-hectare, family run winery handed down from father to son since 1950. It's now under the stewardship of Bernard Michaut, an ex-chef, who works with his son Adrien. Their winemaking is meticulous and the wines are benchmarks for the region. They are fastidious about producing concentrated, mineral and very precise wines which reflect the particular terroirs of Chablis, with vines on both Portlandian and Kimmeridgian soils. La Motte's wines are regularly chosen for the Tastevinage label, a rigorous selection by the Confrérie des Chevaliers de Tastevin of wines they regard as offering the best of the region in terms of quality and style.
When to drink:
Cracking on its own, but just as happy alongside roast chicken, fresh shellfish, or a crisp green salad - the bright citrus and steely freshness keeping everything light, lively, and delicious.
