Description
In a nutshell:
A smooth, balanced and robust red blend, showcasing ripe black fruit and spice flavours from California, USA.
The lowdown:
The Peterson approach is to capture the essence of vintage and vineyard, a philosophy called Zero Manipulation. Peterson Winery was established in 1987 in Dry Creek Valley in northern Sonoma County. The father and son team run both the winery and take a lot of care in where they source their grapes from. The grapes for this wine come from the Tollini Vineyard, which is in Mendocino Countys Redwood Valley. The vineyard has been run by the Tollini family for many generations. This wine is a blend of, predominantly Petit Sirah, along with Carignan, Syrah and Grenache. The vines are planted on southwest facing benches in the Redwood Valley and are cultivated with a meticulously sustainable approach. The gentlest winemaking techniques were employed to maximise flavours, aromas and the original essence of the grapes. Spontaneous fermentation took place with natural yeasts and punch-downs and racking to help the wine develop. The wine was then barrel aged for 22 months in 18% new American oak, 22% two-year old European oak and 60% neutral barrels. This results in a wine that is smooth, yet robust, showing a lovely balance and complexity of aromas. Ripe blackberry, toasty cocoa and hints of spicy cedar on the nose, and a palate full of boysenberry, plum and cherry with notes of coffee and cigar box on the finish.
When to drink:
This is a very versatile wine when food matching with; pork, beef or game make particularly good pairings.
