The Lowdown
Widely accepted as a benchmark Australian Riesling, Wigan has built its reputation on purity, precision and remarkable longevity. Named after long-time winemaker Andrew Wigan, it has collected an impressive haul of trophies and medals over the years, but what matters most is the style. Lime zest and green apples are driven by racy acidity, underpinned by a mineral edge that runs the length of the palate. With bottle age, it develops delicate toast and honey, while remaining dry, focused and firmly built to last.
The Occasion
Superb now for its citrus clarity, and capable of developing gracefully over the next few years, gaining savoury depth to match shellfish, white fish or Asian dishes.
The Producer
The name Peter Lehmann is practically synonymous with the Barossa Valley, but it all started with a sticky situation back in 1979. Faced with a glut of grapes and struggling growers, Peter famously offered a deal - I'll take your grapes and turn them into wine, he said, but I'll only be able to pay you once it sells. The grateful growers agreed, and many reckon that without this audacious arrangement, the Barossa might have lost a good deal of its precious old vines. Thanks to Peter's sheer determination and savvy, the winery quickly became a Barossa icon, producing wines that made waves both in Australia and abroad. Though Peter himself has since passed on and the company's changed hands, the legacy he built - of crafting some of South Australia's finest - remains untarnished and highly respected.
